Roles and Responsibilities

Fire Keeper

  1. To act as a spokesperson and primary contact person for the NSU on any issue that may arise from time to time within the University setting as well as within the global community.
  2. To proactively engage in a communications strategy directed at campus media, in conjunction with the communications councilor.
  3. To act as NSU representative on the University of Victoria Student Society (UVSS) and the Canadian Federation of Students (CFS) Aboriginal Caucus.
  4. Act as one of four signing officers (please note: 2 out of 4 people must sign).

Administrative Councilor

  1. Responsible for the day-to-day operations of the NSU, including the professional accountability of the NSU staff, work study students and council members.
  2. Responsible for ensuring that an orientation session and a year-end planning session for NSU Council and any interested members take place.
  3. Works with the Finance councilor to ensure the financial information is coordinated and accurate.
  4. Act as one of four signing officers (please note: 2 out of 4 people must sign).
  5. Responsible for ensuring that monthly NSU meetings take place with an alternating Chairperson. Chair is responsible for ensuring the minutes for the meeting are taken, compiled and distributed.
  6. Responsible for all records and documents of the NSU. Facilitate the preservation of historic and cultural information through the maintenance of the database and library of resources.

Advocacy Councilor

  1. To liaison between students and the Native Students Union Council.
  2. To support and provide references for students on-campus and off-campus.
  3. To be NSU's representative on the UVSS Advocacy Council.
  4. To coordinate NSU's external advocacy work and political actions.

Education Councilor

  1. Responsible for organizing and arranging speakers and workshops for the NSU.
  2. Build links with the academic community, both internal and external.
  3. Collect and distribute information on scholarships, bursaries and special awards for NSU members.
  4. Organize one panel during Native Awareness Week.
  5. Coordinate the First Nations Student Symposium

Finance Councilor

  1. Prepare projected budget for school term; monthly budget reports, and fundraising reports.
  2. Present monthly reports to NSU meetings (written or verbal)
  3. Compilation of a year end report and recommendations for upcoming year.
  4. Responsible for accountability of day-to-day expenditures and bank balances. Advise the council members of budgetary needs and/or projections and/or oversights.
  5. Work with Administrative Councilor to coordinate accountability information of the NSU.
  6. Act as one of four signing officers (please note: 2 out of 4 people must sign).

Membership Councilor

  1. Ensure information is disseminated among the members of the NSU. This included the distribution and posting of notices for special, council, and general meetings of the NSU.
  2. Act as a contact person for all new students and actively recruit members for the NSU each year.
  3. Develop, maintain and distribute and orientation package to new and continuing students to assist in their transition to the University of Victoria.
  4. Responsible for updating and maintaining the database of native student members, tribal affiliations, telephone numbers and addresses (including email).
  5. Coordinate NSU participation in the September Weeks of Welcoming ceremony.
  6. Coordinated the design, publication and distribution of the internal newsletter.
  7. In consultation with the consensus-based agreement of the council members of the NSU, may act as a spokesperson from time to time.

Social & Cultural Councilor

  1. To organize dinners, pizza lunches and other social events for the NSU. The position is also responsible for arranging the year end celebration in honour of our graduates and exceptional members.
  2. Act as one of four signing officers (please note: 2 out of 4 people must sign).
  3. Network with student organizations and disseminate information to the membership in regard to information and events of interest to students.
  4. Liaison with the University's Aboriginal Liaison Officer on issues of protocol.
  5. Assist the Education Councilor in organizing speakers and workshops.
  6. Coordinate NSU participation in Aboriginal Awareness Week.
  7. Assist in the coordination of NSU participation in Weeks of Welcome.
